Anon, Endometriosis, ovarian cysts, and adhesions (scar tissue that can be caused by endo, infections, etc.) can all CAUSE infertility. If these things aren't removed, infertility will get worse and could cause permanent damage. A laparoscopy that includes removal of endometriosis, cysts, and adhesions will help restore fertility. This surgery will in NO WAY cause infertility. In fact, if you are trying to conceive, your best chances to conceive are from recovery to about 9 or 10 months if you do have endo. Using birth control is a good method to help prevent new endo from growing back, but it will not really shrink what you have. If the cysts shrink at all, it won't be enough for them to go away or to stop causing problems altogether. For your overall health, especially your fertility, it would be best for you to have this surgery. Plus, this is the ONLY way for you to be properly diagnosed. The surgery will keep you down for a few days, and recovery is different for everyone, and every surgery, but you will be just fine. Oh, and to answer your birth control questions. I am on continuous birth control pills. After the third week of pills I start a new pack right away to stop my periods, and I have a period once every 5 or 6 packs which works out to about 4 months. This works on the theory of retrograde bleeding as a possible cause of endo, where the not all the menstrual blood comes out, some is shot up, and blown out into the abdomen eventually forming cysts. The less blood flow you have, the less of a chance you have of developing new cysts. I had my second laparoscopy in November, and after 1 1/2 years of continuous birth control pills, I had no new cysts at all, only adhesions that were removed. There is no cure for this disease, and the sooner you diganose it and take control of it, the better off your fertility will be in the long run. I wish you much luck! Let us know if you have any more questions about the procedure.
