Laparoscopic risks

I was wondering about laparoscopic surgery and effects it may have with fertility. I had an ultrasound (after complaining of bad cramps during my yearly obgyn examination) and my doctor found some ovarian cysts on both of my ovaries. My obgyn gave me the choice to "wait it out" by using the birth control pill and seeing if the cysts will shrink. She felt that doing laparoscopic surgery would be better because she would find out exactly what is going on with the cysts (endometrosis, hormone related, etc...).

I am 30 years old, never been pregnant and would like to become pregnant in the future. Generally, how invasive is this particular sugery as far as fertility is concerned? Also, if it is endometrosis, how do birth control pills help the problem? I have so many questions and the next time I talk to my doctor will be for my pre-op!
