Kari,

I have had a hysterectomy but kept ovaries so I did not have hormone therapy. (a hysterectomy is technically removing the uterus only. Removing the ovaries is an oophorectomy. Non-medical people often say a hysterectomy removes the ovaries.) A hysterectomy ,depending on the reason for having it, should may make your mother feel better, not worse. I am very glad I had the surgery. It will not make her age faster. She should not have a weak bladder unless there is an error in surgery (not common).

You haven't said how old she is or the reason for the surgery. If she is having ovaries removed, she may or may not have estrogen replacement therapy , depending on the reason for the surgery. The current practice is to give the LOWEST dose for the SHORTEST period of time. Estrogen is for relief of hotflashes ONLY, it is not to prevent heart disease or other diseases. If she cannot take estrogen, your doctor may try anti-depressants, which help relief hot flashes in many women. If medications the doctor gives her don't help, she needs to call and get an adjustment. Hormone replacement is often a trial and error process. Best wishes on her surgery- write back if you have more questions. (you're a good daughter to be concerned. She will need some help from you as she recovers- cooking and cleaning) :)
