Re: Dear RachelFrom: Rachel (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri Jan 31 21:41:40 2003
Victoria, breakthrough bleeding (by which i mean light spotting, not full out period, and maybe i'm not using that term correctly) is (or can be) normal when your body is first getting used to continuous bcp. if it doesn't subside after time, then of course it's not normal, and the amounts of hormones in the prescribed bcp probably are not right for the particular woman. when i first started with continuous bcp, i was on lo ovral, and had taken it normally for 3 years previously with no problem. when i started taking it continuously after my first lap in march 2001, i was spotting the weeks i was skipping my period. this never stopped, and i was having a variety of other problems as well, so my pill was switched to ovcon 35. every once in a great while, if i'm in my first week of pills (my skip week) and i take a pill even a half an hour late, several hours later i will spot a little bit. or, if my diet is horrible that cycle, i could spot. but, if i do well with diet and make sure i take my pill at 8 am on the dot, every morning, i'm okay. i was just suggesting to wendy that she take some time with the continuous bcp because she's only a month and a half into it, which would be two three-week cycles. unfortunately, that's not enough time for the body to adjust to the constant level of hormones, or enough time to judge if the level of hormones is right for her. it takes the body a while to adjust. now, if she were having full-blown periods, and couldn't stop bleeding, then i would tell her to see her doctor. but, she said she was having reddish-brown discharge, which i also get on occasion. Oh goodness, Victoria, I think I read your message a little differently than you wrote it. I appologize. Well, I think this information is still good for Wendy, so please don't be offended by my over-explanation. I think I misread your message in a different tone.
