When medicine was a lot simpler, back in the 70's time, you may have been able to be pretty sure they were on the mark. Times and situations were a lot more different then. People are different, and there is so much more we've learned in those years.

INSMED had $$$ in INS-1 for PCOS treatment, but stopped the trials on the drugs because it didn't work as listed. There are other examples of this, so you just have to verify with other sources, like you said. There are other things besides money (ego would be the next) that someone would have an interest in too.
