Kristy,

I don't remember how long it takes for them to kick in. I think the instructions say take 2 pills for something like three days and then cut down to 1 pill per day. I take them all the time. I can't say they work perfectly, but if I don't take them, it is a problem. I take two a day not just one. This was okayed by my doc. Make sure you are drinking lots of water. Making sure you get some fiber is important too, but I don't use a fiber supplement.
