Re: BCP Continuous, need adviceFrom: Amy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue Dec 31 07:51:49 2002
Wendy, I have taken bcp for years but just started them continuously to try and help my endo. From what I understand, this method tricks your body into thinking you are pregnant, thus causing your body to produce less estrogen, which is the fuel for endo. The thinking is that this gives the endo implants a chance to "receed" or shrink because they are not getting the estrogen fuel they need to continue to grow. For years many docs have said pregnancy is a cure for endo, which we all know is not true, but I think this was based on the fact that many women had less problems after a pregnancy because the implants had shrunk during the pregnancy. I have been doing continuous for about three months now and it has helped me tremendously. My endo pain is almost non-existent right now and not having a period is great! I had the same concerns you did but my Doc insures me this is safe and something that can be done until menopause. There is much debate on whether a woman should "force" a period every few months, or never have one at all. I know women who do it both ways. My doc wants me to force one every four months, but I am going to talk to him about this in Feb. If there is no reason to have a period, and no danger in NOT having one, I am going to see if I can bypass them altogether. Who wants to have a period if it isn't necessary? Hope this helps a little. Feel free to email me privately if you want to talk further. You also might want to search the forum for old messages about continuous bcp. There has been much discussion on the topic. Hugs! Amy
