Re: BCP Continuous, need adviceFrom: Rachel (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon Dec 30 20:03:11 2002
Wendy, Continuous bcp feeds on of the idea that retrograde bleeding is a cause of endo. With this treatment, skipping periods obviously lessens the chances for retrograde bleeding because you don't begin to bleed in the first place. I began continuous bcp after my first lap in March 2001 where lots of endo and large and small cysts were removed. My second lap was November 2002 (8 weeks ago), and all that was found were adhesions; there was no new endo implants or cysts. I do still get endo pain, because I have the disease, but, I developed no new endo on this treatment. Also, I've probably only had 7 periods since March 2001. Anyway, this treatment doesn't work for everyone, but I'm very happy with what's it's done for me. To answer your question, if you take the bcp normally (taking the 7 placebo pills), it's proably not going to help you much. I was on bcp as normally directed for 5 years before I was diagnosed, and was found to have a cyst the size of a softball on my right ovary. This treatment is not dangerous, but you do need to make sure you find the right pill for you. If after 4 months you don't feel that you are adjusting well to the pill you're on, talk to your doctor about trying a different pill. I'm finding that most women do very well with either Lo Ovral or Ovcon 35. I've been on both, but I didn't adjust to the Lo Ovral very well taking it continuously. Ovcon 35 I love. The jury is still out on how long this treatment is safe. Some say women shouldn't go longer than three months without a period, some say six months, and some say indefiniately. I'm on a 4-month plan myself. Wendy, the best thing you can do is to listen to your body; if something doesn't feel right, then it's probably not right for you. But, you also do need to give this treatment time. It takes a while to adjust to those constant hormones.
