Re: What to expect from the laparoscopyFrom: Amy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed Nov 6 09:08:00 2002
Leigh, I have had two laps and neither one of them were bad. If you are nervous, let them know when you arrive at the hospital and they can give you something prior to surgery to relax you while you wait. My theory is the less I know the better, so I ask to be doped up pretty good and they always take care of it. Also, if you have had anesthesia before and it made you sick, they can give you an injection to combat the nausea. I always insist on this! You will be in some pain when you wake up, but they will give you a pain shot (probably demerol) and then write you a prescription for something else. You may also have some shoulder pain and be bloated afterward, as they fill your abdominal area up with gas during the surgery to separate the organs. As the gas wears off, it can cause some discomfort in the chest and shoulder areas, but nothing severe-more uncomfortable and annoying than anything. Recovery time will depend on how much scar tissue they remove during the surgery. My first lap had me back at work in four days. My second took longer to recover from and I was off work for almost two weeks. Just plan on taking it easy for awhile. If you live alone, you may want to have someone stay with you for a day or two, just to help you out and get things for you. All in all, laparoscopy is not bad at all. The first one is the scariest because you don't know what to expect, but it really isnt' bad at all. Good luck! You'll be fine! Amy
