To everyone about the Pain Management issueFrom: Kristy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu Oct 31 01:26:47 2002
To everyone, I want to say one more thing about the Pain Management issue. Pls understand that yes there are some that are interested enough in helping women with endo pain and it's wonderful that they are out there. The problem is that they are a very, very small group. A friend of mine wrote a letter to the Academy of Pain Management on the behalf of women with female problems and have chronic pain. She wrote to ask about this issue and the lady in charge said what I told you all about most PM drs and their lack of training when it comes to female related pain. But as I also said I have talked to other women that have backed up what this woman has said. To the Anon that replied about what PM drs can do, yes, they do have a lot of wonderful things to help people with chronic pain. You mentioned that you were recently diagnosed with Endo and I'm sorry that you have to deal with this like the rest of us. Sad to say though this disease is still so misunderstood as to the kind of effects it has on the life of a woman or girl. And it's b/c of this misunderstanding of the disease that there are still a number of people in the general community as well as those in the medical community that think we are just making this up. I tried very hard to find a PM dr that might be able to help me with my female related pain, starting with the one I saw in the late 90s. In my hometown we have about 20 PM clinics (actually that also includes some of the ones in the next county over) and when I called to ask about their experience with female related issues such as Endo the answer was the same: we have no experience. If there would have been one that I could have found I would have gone to one but I would have had to find one that would allow me to stick with what I know works for me. PM drs field of expertise when it comes to Pain Management issues has to do with musculoskeletal issues like Fibromyalgia for example, or cancer related pain or something like that. Every ad I've ever seen for these drs (at the time I called) not once did it ever say that they knew how to treat female related pain. My feeling is that with the ones that are able to help some of the women with endo that they should list in their ads that they work with female related pain as well as the stuff that are usually in the ads when you look in the yellow pages. I hope however that some day all PM drs will be able to treat the chronic pain that comes with all diseases. That is not the case right now. The kind of illness you have determines whether or not they can help you as well as any other risk factors when it comes to your health. The reason I'm telling you all this is b/c between my friend, myself, and other women I have talked to I'm able to back up what I'm saying about PM drs when it comes to female related issues. Not about PM in general b/c as I said in general they can do wonderful things for those with chronic pain. It's just that female related issues such as Endo are not important to the majority. To those of you that choose to go to PM drs and are able to find someone that knows how to really treat the pain with female issues such as endo and feel good with the treatment then wonderful. I felt I had to give this info to Sheila b/c she really doesn't want to go and I wanted her to understand that she shouldn't feel bad if she doesn't want to go. And also not to feel bad if she does consult the PM dr and they say that they don't want to touch her. Many women are in this situation right now. Any way, I wish everyone the best. And Anon I'm sorry if I upset you. That wasn't my intent. I was just giving information that is fully researched, if it weren't I would have never said it. ===== Kristy :) http://www.geocities.com/sokokl/kristyspersonalpage.html I am a Medical Secretary who does a lot of learning from reading on the Net, books, my dr(s), as well as sharing my own personal experiences.
