HOW SAFE IS YOUR MRI MAGNETIC ZONE? ------------------------------------

The MRI scanner is a super-conducting magnet that is always on. The powerful magnetic force attracts ------------------------------------ metal objects and can cause seemingly innocent objects to become airborne missiles that can cause ------------------------------------ serious injury to someone standing in its path or could seriously damage the magnet. Above are some examples of objects brought under the influence of the magnetic force generated by the MRI scanner.

Beyond MR safety training, good safety practices, patient screening and emergency procedure protocols, proper selection of the tools and related equipment are paramount in reducing potential hazards introduced into your MRI magnetic zone.

Any objects introduced into the MRI magnetic zone that are constructed in part or whole with ferromagnetic materials and even some objects labeled as non-magnetic will come under the influence of the MRI scanner.

Before introducing any item or object into your MRI surroundings consult a reputable vendor specializing in medical magnetic environments, their specialists can address questions or concerns and steer you to a solution that will meet the requirements of your MRI magnetic zone.

AUTHORITATIVE PRINCIPAL IN MRI SAFETY TODAY. DR. FRANK G. SHELLOCK -------------------------------------------------------------------- Frank G. Shellock, Ph.D. is a physiologist with more than 16 years of experience conducting laboratory -------------------------------------------------------------------- and clinical investigations in the field of magnetic resonance imaging. He is an Adjunct Clinical Professor -------------------------------------------------------------------- of Radiology at the University of Southern California, Keck School of Medicine, the Founder of the Institute for Magnetic Resonance Safety, Education, and Research (http://www.IMRSER.org), and serves as a Special Employee to the Food and Drug Administration. As a commitment to the field of MRI safety, bioeffects, and patient management, he created and maintains the internationally popular web site, http://www.MRIsafety.com. This web site currently has over 21,000 registered users.

Dr. Shellock is a Member of the Committee for Standards and Accreditation of the Commission on Neuroradiology and MR for the American College of Radiology, the Safety Committee for the International Society for Magnetic Resonance Imaging, and a member of the Sub-Committee on MR Safety and Compatibility for the American Society for Testing and Materials. He is a Reviewing Editor for several medical and scientific journals and was recently appointed Associate Editor for the Journal of Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

Dr. Shellock’s memberships in professional societies include the American College of Radiology, the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, the Radiological Society of North America, the California Radiological Society, the Hawaii Radiological Society, and the Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance. Dr. Shellock is a recipient of a National Research Service Award from the National Institutes of Health, National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and has received numerous research grants from governmental agencies and private organizations. He is currently participating in MR safety research at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation that is funded by a grant awarded from the National Institutes of Health and conducting MRI research on Ironman Triathletes at North Hawaii Community Hospital.

Dr. Shellock has authored five textbooks, over 50 book chapters, more than 160 peer-reviewed articles, and over 190 scientific abstracts. His books include Magnetic Resonance Procedures: Health Effects and Safety (considered an MR safety best seller with over 7,000 copies sold to date), Kinematic MRI of the Joints: Functional Anatomy, Kinesiology, and Clinical Applications, and the Reference Manual for Magnetic Resonance Safety: Update 2002. Each year a new Reference Manual for Magnetic Resonance Safety is revised to include the latest safety recommendations and guidelines as well as information for implants and devices.

Dr. Shellock is frequently invited to lecture, both nationally and internationally. He has provided plenary lectures on MR safety to numerous medical and governmental organizations including the Radiological Society of North America, the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, the American College of Radiology/American Roentgen Ray Society, the American Society of Neuroradiology, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Oklahoma Heart Institute, the Head and Neck Radiology Society, the Center for Devices and Radiological Health (FDA), the Magnetic Resonance Managers Society, the American Heart Association, the American Society of Neuroimaging, and the Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance.

His company, Magnetic Resonance Safety Testing Services (http://www.MagneticResonanceSafetyTesting.com) specializes in evaluating MR safety and MR compatibility for implants and devices, assessing electromagnetic field-related bioeffects, and investigating clinical MR imaging applications for low-field and high-field MR systems.
