'breakthrough bleeding'

I am seventeen years old, soon to be eighteen. I have been on the pill since I was fourteen and have never experienced breakthrough bleeding. I've been able to pin point when I was going to start menstruating within a couple of hours for 3 years plus. Just recently I stated bleeding 4 days after I got off of my period. This bleeding has continued for four weeks now. My doctor says to keep taking the pill and it will clear up. The thing is, I haven't been on antibiotics, had diarrea, or any other stomach problems. Could this be something serious and should I get a second opinion since my doctor hasn't given me an official exam?
