I had occasional instances of this before the birth of my daughter, and a little after. I've never thought to ask a dr about it, as I remember my mother occasionally having the same thing when I was younger. Everytime I take a bath (which in my case is nearly daily -- I'm afraid to stand in the shower, as there's a full length window and I'm afraid I'll get dizzy and fall thru...I know, issues! lol), after I dry off I pour a little peroxide in the button, dry it, and use a swab to dab alcohol in after. It doesn't hurt, and I haven't had the problem in years. To tell you the truth, got the idea after my dog came down with an ear infection that smelled curiously like the button when irritated, and this was what the vet recommended -- for the dog's ears, not my belly button. Sorry. ;-)
