How can I help a sister who's in denial about her endo?From: anonymous (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri Sep 6 11:25:25 2002
I need some advice about helping my sister, who is in denial about her endometriosis. She's been having more and more problems related to it, but I can't convince her to see her specialist about it. My sister was diagnosed with severe endometriosis in her late teens. She has always hated going to doctors and has avoided it as much as possible. When she was diagnosed, she did agree to treat the condition, first with Danocrine and Lupron, and then with laparoscopic surgeries (since the medication didn't work). For the past three years she has been having more and more pain and heavier bleeding, but she now refuses to see the doctor and gives a variety of excuses: she hates the exams, she won't see the doctor unless she is convinced that he'll find something, and she believes that pain "makes a person stronger." Often she says that that her condition is "no worse than a cold," and lately she's been denying that she has it anymore, claiming that it was probably cured. She hasn't seen a doctor in several years because she doesn't believe in annual exams. In fact, I think her whole problem is related to the exams. I've tried everything to encourage her to seek treatment again. Despite the fact that I remind her that two doctors diagnosed her with severe endometriosis, and despite the fact that she admits her specialist is a wonderful doctor and very nice person, she still denies that she has a problem. Is there anything I can do or say that will help her decide to get this taken care of? I'm very worried abou her. She has been treated for endometriomas in the past, and I'm worried that she may have another -- goodness knows what else she has. I hate seeing her in pain like this. Any ideas? Thanks!
