Re: Chronic Bacterial InfectionsFrom: amy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat May 25 09:24:55 2002
I have had something similiar - which has been diagnosed as just about everything... but the one that seems to fit is this... When my immune system is weakened the good bacteria (those acidopholis helps create) go into overdrive and multiply causing a Very acidic environment that is evidenced by a murky white discharge that does have a stronger odor. When it touches my skin it has the effect of acid and can burn (my nurse practicioneer told me that most peoples skin doesn't react this strongly and some aren't even bothered, but since I'm a redhead and have super sensitive skin I would), create bleeding cuts in the folds of my labia, etc. Here's what has helped. 1. watch my immune system and do everything to boost it 2. when it gets really bad use a simple water and baking soda douche to counteract the acidity (it works wonders and within minutes I am back to normal!) 3. ONLY wear cotton underwear (NEVER synthetics) and don't wear any to bed - this not only helpes it not happen, but really really minimizes the smell. 4. I NEVER take antibiotics - for me all they do is create a short healing then my body tries to counteract them killing all my good bacteria and makes too much and I'm back at square one. 5. I don't do this one because I can't stand pads, but I've been told to stop using tampons because they effect it coming back after my cycle. 6. I don't know if you have the burning - but the most effective way to protect my skin is to put a light coating of vitamin A&D ointment (without any frangrance!) over my skin. 7. NEVER use douches, sprays etc (except the baking soda one and that only when needed) As an endnote: don't listen to your doctor about "re-infection", I heard that one too and I KNOW it isn't about that... trust yourself on that one, it sounds like you know that too. I hope this helps you - I completely understand the stress of always having to deal with this - hang in there... it seems to all be about balance :) feel free to email me privately - I just figured that there might be other women dealing with this and the more candid and open we can be the better, warmly, amy
