Re: Wanda and all Re: Allergy to meds, hormones, etc. (very long)From: anonymous (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue Apr 23 02:27:02 2002
Dear Wanda, One more question (since you mentioned already having seen an allergist), did your allergist happen to test you for allergic reaction against your hormones? On the witsendo list, some of the women there had been speaking about how some of us with endo have pain when ingesting phytoestrogens, dairy, etc., and others with endo actually feel better when ingesting the phytoestrogens, soy milk, etc.! Some of the women who had been patients of Dr. Kresch (now deceased) and Drs Cook and Metzger have been tested, as a part of treatment, for allergies against their various hormones. It turns out that they are allergic to their some of their own hormones, ie. some to progesterone, others to estrogen, and so forth!!! So this may tie into why some have no problem when consuming phytoestrogens. Anyway, I found this to be very interesting because I had thought that endo was mainly some type of disease which feeds off of estrogen. But now, as I've learned that endo is now considered to be an autoimmune disease, this all seems to make much more sense in that its as if we are allergic to whatever the offending agent is, be it estrogen, progesterone, who knows whatever else, and the resulting, lets say, scar tissue, is what has been labeled as endometriosis. *However, in my last surgery, not only was a bit of endo found, but also some tissue was excised which, upon pathology, showed it to be fibrous tissue lined by epithelium and showing focal foreign body giant cell reaction. This tissue, which showed foreign body giant cell reaction, burned/flared the same as the endo pain. The wording the pathologist chose "foreign body giant cell reaction" sounds, to me (keep in mind I am just a layperson lol), like autoimmune/an allergic reaction to my own cells. If someone here is in medical school, maybe they could make more sense of it for us. Anyway, the recent increase in my allergies prompted my line of thought lol. From the little bit I've read, mast cells appear to be the cells which get irritated and release all these histamines when we have an allergic reaction. Well, I've had the most bizarre allergic reactions to a couple of supplements, one is MSM, the other, B5. Anyway, the entire area around my eyes were all swollen, red, burning, itchy, as were my cheeks and face, but especially the eyes. I read that it is the mast cells which are responsible for this reaction, and that this signifies a deeper allergic reaction in the body. So back to how this all may (lol or may not) relate to endo -- I am now thinking that perhaps it is an allergic reaction in our bodies. This is why I experience "?endo pain?" when I ingest those offending items, ie. soy, phytoestrogens, dairy, cottage cheese, eggs, etc.. But perhaps the whole process begins, as Dr. Kresch, and now Drs. Cook and Metzger, have theorized with their tests and homeopathic drops, perhaps it begins as an allergy against our own hormones???? Its a good thing I'm able to post this anonymously so that only the few who recognize me can laugh at my silly ideas lol. I honestly have no idea what I'm talking about lol, I haven't any medical knowledge, so I'm probably way off track, but just thought that I would bounce it off of you. What do you think about finding out what Metzger tests for and then having those hormones tested by your allergist to see whether their theory holds water?! I haven't insurance so I can't test the theory. I'm going to paste this post to witsendo and see what those patients of Metzger, Cook, Kresch, have to say as well. I guess, if their theory is correct, California may, once again, be ahead of the rest of the nation. I don't know -- I wonder how their theory ties in with the latest endo research. Then again, I've read that some experts feel that once endo is excised, it is gone -- now if that is the case, then my allergy theory wouldn't at all make sense because this process would seem infinite or until the allergy is eliminated (unless it only affects certain cells per Redwine theory -- maybe that is the answer?). And I have communicated with endo patients who have had their endo excised and have had NO recurrence of their pain. I wonder whether they still have problems with allergies. One last thing, some have mentioned finding relief with practitioners of Chinese Medicine. Well, chinese medicine, I think, is about balancing the body's needs -- so does that take me back to the allergy theory lol. I don't know. On second thought, I've heard of an endo doc (think he is chinese, not positive), Dr. Lie, Toronto, Canada, who excises endo but also places his patients on an endo diet. So if he isn't sending his patients to chinese herbalists for endo treatment, then I wonder whether there truly exists a treatment for endo which doesnt' involve surgery. UGH so many questions. I wish we could have a roundtable discussion with all of these endo experts so that we could pick their brains lol. And why is it that some can have their endo excised and be painfree, eat/drink whatever they wish w/o experiencing pain -- and others have their endo excised and still have pain? Okay, I've now numbed my brain for the year 2002 lol.
