Re: child sexual abuse and endometriosisFrom: Ana (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue Apr 9 21:13:23 2002
When I was initially diagnosed with endo my doctor said I got it from my sexual promiscuity. I had only had sex with one man at the time so I didn't understand, but this doctor insisted you can get this disease through sex. I have always wondered if I got this disease b/c this guy couldn't manage to keep his pants on but at the same time, I have never seen anything during research supporting this. Was anyone else told something like this?
>----- Original Message ----- Hi Anna: i am very sorry about what happened to you. I have done extensive reading, and I have never seen anything credible supporting such a theory! Endometriosis is a physical condition in which your uterine lining grows outside of the uterus. I have seen many studies attempting to determine the cause of endo, but I have never seen one suggesting a relationship to childhood sexual abuse. There are some theories that abuse may contribute to pelvic pain, or to the pain perceptors (makes you feel pain more), but no, I don't think that there is even one documented case of endo being caused by abuse. If someone is telling you this, I really think that they are mistaken. Best wishes.
