Re: 19 and have scheduled laparotomy -- please help!

Anonymous, I have had 3 laparotomies but they were done 1978, 1981 and 1985 - before they perfected the laser laparoscopic procedures they do today. I have also had 4 laparoscopies, the 2 early ones were diagnostic only and the 2 later ones to remove endo and cysts.

Anonymous, I would suggest that you ask your doctors why they want to go straight to the laparotomy. The only way to diagnose Endo for sure is by a laparascopy and at that time they can also do quite a bit of surgery to remove the endo and cysts. Before getting a second opinion, I would be questioning those doctors. They may have a very valid reason, however you should be made aware of them. If you still feel uncomfortable then seek a 2nd opinion. A laparotomy is not a minor procedure so you want to be really sure that it's the only way to proceed, surgically. Your following comment bothers me: "I'm hesitant to do this, as my doctor has done such surgery before (said that she sees teenage girls with these cysts "all the time") and that she isn't 100% positive whether they are endometriomas or not as only surgery can show this for sure." I certainly hope your doctor doesn't put all her patients with cysts through a laparotomy!!!

Figure on about a month of recovery time from a laparotomy. Some women will tell you less, some will say more but that is probably about the average.

Hope this helps a little.
