I had fibroids. The cervix was also removed. I opted to do it vaginally. What a mistake. I came out of the surgery with a hemotoma behind my bladder and urethral incontinence (yes, I had to wear depends) and horrible bladder pain and jumping. I had a urinary tract infection that just would not go away. My kidneys hurt, my uretha, vagina and bladder was all on fire. All the antibiotics I took really has screwed up my immune system. I feel very very weak all of the time. Other medications such as ditripan and detrol to control the bladder from jumping screwed up my sight and my heart is now always jumping around and caused horrible constipation. It has been three months and I still cannot go back to work. I have had all the tests to rule out a puncture in my bladder and it doesn't appear so; but I am still not convinced; I developed hypermobility of the urethra, which requires surgery (a sling usually synthetic or a cadaveric skin) to attempt to correct the excessive movement of the uretral tube) and also the bladder neck sphincter was injured and wouldn't close properly contributing to urine leakage (all this with the use of the retractor that the doctor used to pull the bladder out of the way during the vaginal surgery). Now I have constant and excessive vaginal discharge (which I still believe to be urine) and am just besides myself. I wish I could have gone back three months and one day and opted not to have the hysterectomy. Now, I have developed cysts on my right ovary and it goes on and on and on. I thought this was a simple surgery, but it turned out to be every woman's nightmare. Better get all the information you can before taking the risk.
