Re: Questions about taking birth control continuously-and some of my own symptoms!

Natalie,

Feel free to e-mail me off the list if you want to talk some more about this. I did continuous bcp for nearly 4 years before I went on Zoladex (medication similar to Lupron). There is a lot of debate about the safeness of continuous bcp but the dr I have now and the dr I had before (left him b/c of communication issues) assured me that it was safe to do this until I was ready to have kids. I just went back on continuous. I'm 30 now and I started continuous bcp when I was 26.

I also had a lot of issues with breakthrough bleeding while on the pill continuously but the reason why I had the problem was b/c I didn't have the right brand of bcp. When I found the right bcp I stopped having breakthrough bleeding (this bleeding can also mimick a period). And not once during the time that I had all the breakthrough bleeding did it bother my endo. My endo just started recurring on its own. It had nothing to do with the breakthrough bleeding as a result of the low dosage bcp that I was taking continuously.

It doesn't help every woman who does try it. Some drs believe that you should have a period every 3 or 4 months b/c of the health aspect like you are mentioning but having a period every 3 or 4 months isn't an option for me b/c my periods are so painful when I have them plus just before I was diagnosed with endo in 1997 I was confined to bed for nearly 9 months. The recurrences have been a lot easier for me to deal with for the most part in that I'm able to distinguish right away when I'm having a recurrence.

Every situation is different so you have to do what you are comfortable with. Yes, being on continuous is scary at first but I'm here to help you if you need me to do so.

Take care,

===== Kristy :)
