Had Laparoscopy Done!

Hi Everyone,

I'm just letting you know that I've had my laparoscopy done on the 11th Dec, it didn't go quite as smoothly as hoped infact it was a nightmare.

The surgeon went through a blood vessel in my abdomen and when I came round from the anaesethic I was in excruitating agony, I had also completely forgotten that I had come in for an op and thought I was waking up at home so it was all a bit of a shock. I had been told to tell the nurses in Recovery if I was in pain when I came round so I did this, but all they said to me was well you will be you've had an operation. The pain was increasing, and suddenly my face started to shake, then my legs did, they put oxygen mask on me and wheeled me back to the Day Case ward. I was crying and in alot of pain, shaking and getting frightend. I pointed to my abdomen and said the pain's getting worse, the nurses pulled back the covers and immediately saw the problem. Where the surgeon had cut the blood vessel 2 red patches were appearing under my skin. A pressure bandage was applied to stop the bleeding, I was put on a heart monitor, the head end of my bed was tilted back as my blood pressure had now dropped dangerously low and I could not stop shaking. A blood sample was taken ready to do a blood transfusion if needed. The pressure bandage eased the pain and the shaking began to stop, my blood pressure started to normalise and I managed to calm down. I was given a heavy duty painkilling injection and an antiobiotic injection. The surgeon came to see me, my blood pressure was taken and he was the one that administered the antiobiotic injection. I felt truly awful-sick and dizzy, I still had the oxygen mask on. My ex-boyfriend had arrived 30 mins before I arrived back from theatre and he was very worried, he couldn't see me for 30 mins after I had arrived back. In the afternoon I was violently sick then I was transferred to a ward where I spent the next 4 days. I went in on the Tuesday and came out on the Friday afternoon. The nursing staff were brilliant, so supportive and caring and acted so fast! My Consultant came to see me the following morning-he was not the one that performed the Laparoscopy. He drew a black felt-tip mark around the border of the bleed on my abdomen 7 inches across by 3 inches down. He told me to take it easy. I was visited several times over the following days by diff members of my Consultant's team. The surgeon who did my op said he had gone through the blood vessel because the instruments were sharp, my stomach was very tough, this he said was due to my previous operation scars (which I had been told would not create a problem), my stomach was not floppy because I had not had any children, and the anaesethic had not relaxed my stomach muscles. I have asked my Dr to get a surgeon's report because I would like to find out exactly what went wrong. I now have a 2 month recovery period instead of the hoped for week. My abdomen is yellow with the bruising from the blood clots underneath the skin. I have been told that if it starts to spread then I will need a 2nd op to drain the blood clots. It's been a painful, agonising, frightening experience which I do not want to repeat.

The results of the Laparoscopy show there was no cause for the period problems and spotting/pain I have been suffering from since I was 20. I have spoken to my Dr and we have agreed for me to try the Depo-Provera injection, starting it in the New Year. My Dr paid me a huge compliment-he said he thought I was brilliant to have gone through the Laparoscopy and go on the Depo-Provera injection considering I don't like needles or hospitals. I told him if I ever have to have another op he's going to have a hard job on his hands getting me there!

For those who of you who haven't had a laparoscopy and are waiting to have one done, my experience is one which not every woman experiences, and I would not want what happened to me to deter women from having a laparoscopy done. The actual cuts I have are very very small, and if the surgeon hadn't made his error then I would not have experienced any pain at all. I suffered no shoulder tip pain, it just stayed in my abdomen and I got very constipated.

Hope everyone is ready for Christmas. Merry Christmas Take Care Samantha (in the UK, I notice there are 2 Samantha's now!)
