Re: Cyst - 5CM ..Help pleaseFrom: katie (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat Oct 13 12:16:00 2001
Tanya-- you should have an ultrasound done and go from there..i and a 24 year old who has had two ovarian cysts over the past year, one 8 cm in diameter. because the 8 cm cyst was so large, the only way they could remove it was through laporotomy surgery, meaning that they made an incision in my lower abdomen, right below the belly button, and removed the cyst through there. i had about a six week recovery overall from the surgery; two of those weeks i was pretty much bed-ridden, but after the third week, i could return to limited activity. my cyst was classified as an "endometrioma cyst", also known as a "chocolate cyst", meaning that it was a sac filled w. old tissue and blood. it should be noted that the majority of ovarian cysts are not cancerous, especially in someone younger and in good health. my advice would be to have an ultrasound done, and then discuss with your doctor about further treatment. the pain you have been experiencing sounds exactly like the pain i was having when i had my second cyst. pain in the pattern you are describing is one of the symptoms of endometriosis, so you should ask your doctor about the cyst being related to endo, as well. as for having kids, that's something i wonder about as well. i have a cousin who had an ovarian cyst and ended up having her ovary removed, but she went on to have two children. i hope this helps, and good luck with your pain. --katie
