Re: painful intercourse after hysterectomyFrom: Lauren (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu Sep 27 09:42:31 2001
Dear Denise, You do not mention how old you are. My doctor would like me to have a hysterectomy as soon as possible, as I suffer really bad pain every month, and have to take very strong painkillers. There is also the problems of pain during sex, heavy bleeding, nausea etc, etc. Endometriosis is a chronic disease, wich basically means it will always be with you. My mom had a hyst for endo, and now gets cysts of endometrial tissue in her joints.Somebody else I know has endo in her one lung, and I have it in my broad ligaments and on my diaphram. A hyst will probabally not cure me of all my endo or my pain, BUT it will lessen it.At least the very painful periods(that put me in bed) and the heavy bleeding that means I can't go anywhere will be gone, and that in my mind is a good start. I have started an agressive vitamin and mineral regime, and eat in a very healthy manner, avoiding all foods that cause me discomfort. ( too much red meat, too much dairy, soya based products, too much citrus etc.) I feel, even if being healthy does not cure the endo, my body can cope better the healthier it is. Also, most problems after a hyst can be solved.See my reply to the original post. BUT, a hyst is not a cure all, magic event. For some people it works really well, and they get years of pain relief, for others it doen't work as well. Do some research. Also if you are having your ovaries removed, taking estrogen replacement can trigger the endo off again. Speak to your doctor about all these concerns. Two things I can tell you 1. A hyst is forever, there is no going back, 2. It is a very personal decision that you and only you can make. I am seeing a therapist to talk it through and see if it is right for ME, each person is unique, and will be affected in a different way. I also asked my doctor for a list of books to read, to find out what to expect afterwards, and how to deal with problems should they arise, one book that I found particularily helpful is HYSTERECTOMY BEFORE & AFTER by Winnifred B. Cutler Ph.D.Available through Amazon. ALSO, have you checked out the HYSTERSISTER web site, you can get really valuable information there from woman who have been through it all. http://www.hystersisters.org. Hope this helps a bit.
