Hi, I read you letter and just thought I'd let you know that I'd also suffered a 3rd degree tear. I had my first baby in Nov/97 and the obstetrician told me that I'd had some pretty major tears so she would suture them up. Needless to say I had lots of pain and bleeding which lasted a lot longer than the usual post-partem. There was some question whether some of the placenta had been retained. The bleeding eventually stopped on its own after around 12 weeks. When I had my 2nd baby in Feb/2000, the obstetrician thought I'd have to wear a pessary because I had a major uterine prolapse. I wound up just being very careful and the pregnacy and delivery were pretty uneventful. Now, this prolapse (or sorts)was still prominent despite millions of Kegel exercises. The doctor told me I had a cysocele and a rectocele as well as a uterine prolapse. I wanted this repaired so finally had it done 7 days ago. To my surprise, the doctor performing the surgery told me that I did not have these prolapses but rather had suffered a third degree tear when I delivered my first baby and that she was shocked that no one had repaired that tear! She repaired it for me and told me that my inner organs should no longer feel like they are falling out. It just really makes me wonder how many women carry on with these major tears unrepaired and then wind up being diagnosed with prolapses. My doctor told me that due to the extent of the tear damage, no amount of kegel exercises would have made any difference as I had absolutely no tone. Just thought I'd share this info because it may help some of you who have gone through similar things. Tamara >
