Coming out of hiding to give a warning about UltramFrom: Kristy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon Sep 3 20:43:42 2001
Hi Misty and everyone, I've come out of hiding to respond about Ultram. Misty, I'm glad that you have the Ultram to help you but I wanted to give a warning about Ultram. Ultram has an increased risk of seizures and I'm not saying this just b/c those who have a seizure potential has an even greater risk of seizures but I'm also saying it b/c of the fact that even people who have never had problem with some meds have had problems with Ultram and had a seizure. A lady that I know on another endo list took Ultram for the pain related to her endo and a short time later (forgot how long after she took it) she had a seizure. The seizure was so severe that her husband had to take her to the hospital to see if maybe there was something going on neurologically so that they could try to help her if it had something to do with her brain. They did an X-ray of her brain and found nothing abnormal. After all the various tests were run they realized that it was the Ultram. She is now so scared to death of meds that she has never taken before. I like her had a seizure from a medication. Mine came as a result of the anti-inflammatory drug called Voltaren back in 1992. So the point of my story is that there are some meds that can cause people who have never had a health problem in their life as well as even those of us with problems like endo can have seizures. Yes, I know that there are people who do have seizure histories (I did as a child but outgrew it and then got the seizure as a result of the Voltaren) that can make them quite at risk for seizures but on some meds like the Ultram it says right on the label of the patient information that seizures is a potential regardless of medical history. This girl that I just told you about had never had any neurological problems that would be related to seizures like Epilepsy which is why they had to rule out things and that's when she discovered it was the Ultram as I said. I like her have to be very careful what meds I can take. Even though I outgrew the childhood seizures I still have to be careful b/c of the seizure I had 10 years ago on the Voltaren (I only took it once). And even though I can take Cataflam, Relafen, and Dolobid with no problems like I did with the Voltaren my gyn is very protective of me. Yes, for some the drug Ponstel might cause seizures like other types of anti-inflammatory drugs and other kinds of meds out there the Ponstel works well for me as well as the Lortab. The reason that seizures are listed as a potential side effect on different drugs such as Ultram is b/c the pharmaceutical companies got quite a few reports of seizures and it forced them to have to list it under the adverse reactions so that people can be aware that this can happen to anyone regardless of a person's overall health status. Also, on the subject of medications that can possibly cause seizures Lupron is another one. There has already been one reported case of seizures and it's b/c of that case that I would not take Lupron. I did all my research on Zoladex before I said yes and so far so good. Some anti-depressants also have the potential for seizures. Please, please everyone, when you get a medicine that you have never taken before read up on it and ask a ton of questions. When something like a seizure occurs from a medication it's hard not to be afraid of meds that you have never had before. Every time a dr gives me a new medicine I ask a ton of questions, and if it's a medicine that I know nothing about even if one of my drs thinks it's best for me like what just happened recently when the dr's office that I use as my family dr switched one of my sinus medicines I refused to take it and now I'm working on trying to get that particular sinus med that I know I can take safely back. My gyn is very protective of me as I stated earlier. When I was considering Zoladex I also had to talk to my rheumatologist (yes I have osteoarthritis got it long before I started the Zoladex) about how it might affect my arthritis. He told me that if the arthritis got worse as a result of the reactive pain that he could either give me shots in my knee or give me one of the newer anti-inflammatory drugs. I told him that he would have to clear that with my gyn. He said fine after I told him how protective she was. So that nite my gyn called me back (b/c I had more questions for her about the Zoladex) to ask me what I wanted to do and I told her as well as told her about the conversation with my rheumatologist. She told me that if we have to do that he could only give me Vioxx. She didn't have to say anymore than that b/c I knew that Celebrex also has a seizure potential. But back to what I was saying earlier also about why I'm on the Ponstel instead of the Relafen, Cataflam, or the Dolobid. The reason that I couldn't have the Relafen, Cataflam, or Dolobid even though I can take them with no problems is b/c my dr was scared that I would have a seizure. When I let her know that I can also take Ponstel with no problems that was when she said ok. I'm sorry that this is so long but the point of my story is to be aware of the seizure potential with any new medicine or any unusual side effects that may occur with the medicine that is new to you. I hope that this is of help to everyone. Take care and I will write about myself real soon. ===== Kristy :) http://www.geocities.com/sokokl/kristyspersonalpage.html Owner: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Endo_Vulvodynia_PCOS http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Zoladexforendometriosis Get email alerts & NEW webcam video instant messaging with Yahoo!
