Lori: re panicFrom: Robyn Parkin (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon Jul 30 17:58:20 2001
Hi Lori I can understand your panic, Lori! I'm 24 and have had endo for 10 years now, and was only diagnosed last year with a lap. I've just had my 2nd lap and am now on Zoladex (lupron). Before the 2nd lap, they found a large cyst wrapped completely around my left ovary, which burst before the lap - luckily it wasn't a endometrioma etc. It is not unusual to have long and painful periods after a lap. It often depends on how much endo they found and excised - because this means they would be messing around inside you for longer, and moving your organs around more. It can also depend on the skill of your surgeon sometimes. I found that after my first lap, I had a lot of pain the first two or three times I bled, and my surgeon warned me that the first 6 months could be a bit evil. The first one certainly was! This time, because I was put on zoladex before the surgery, I haven't bled and so there has been little pain. I'm all for zoladex - it's the first pain-free time I've had in years! In terms of cysts and cancer, not all cysts are cancerous or cancer-causing. That was my first cyst, as far as I know, and it was a very painful experience. Some cysts do contain cells that can mutate into cancerous ones, but that is not the norm. Most of them are simply fluid-filled sacs that put pressure on surrounding tissue (which is why they can hurt). Mine was squishing my ovary, which is why it was so brutally painful. Sometimes they are filled with blood (they're called endometriomas then), but usually its just like water. I wouldn't get too worried about it - if you're really concerned, have a chat with your ob-gyn and tell him/her about your family history. Hang in there, Lori - endo is a nasty disease but it isn't a death sentence. It is possible to learn to live with it, and don't be afraid of using drugs - they can help a lot. Blessings Robyn P
