<<I've never read this. I don't belong to the ERC. I belong to the Endo Association and I don't recall anything like that in the newsletters.>>

A member of the Endometriosis Research Center's Advisory Board, Dr. Serdar Bulun, and his team of researchers (then at the University of Texas Southwestern) discovered an unusual estrogen-synthesizing enzyme called Aromatase. Aromatase is expressed in the endometrial tissue of women with Endometriosis.

This enzyme allows the wayward tissues to implant on a woman's reproductive and nearby organs. In a further twist, the researchers also uncovered that this enzyme is induced by large amounts of inflammatory prostaglandins produced in the area - thus forming a vicious cycle to make its own estrogen and promote its own further growth.

In a preliminary study released in the April 1998 issue of Fertility & Sterility, Dr. Bulun and his team successfully treated a case of recurrent postmenopausal Endometriosis with Aromatase inhibitors.

Details on Dr. Bulun's work are available both from the ERC and the EA, as he has spoken at both organization's conferences on this topic.
