Re: Hello Ladies( what are women with migraines taking?) ((Peggy))

Peggy, My doctor was giving me Esgic+tablets for my migraines and every day headaches. I took aspirin several times a day every day for years. No relief! He suggested BC powder or Alkaselzer tablets which would be faster and easier on my stomach, along with an Esgic+tablet. I had tried Fiornal, Darvocet, you name it. Nothing worked until I tried the Esgic+tablets. That was 7 years ago. I'm 43 now, and about 145lbs. The only drawback was that ONE Esgic+ tablet with THREE alkaselzer tablets made me sleepy and only dulled the headache. He suggested one and one half of the Esgic+ along with the alkaselzer, and it worked. The only problem was that after 6-8 hours, with my first dose first thing in the morning, I needed another dose by mid afternoon. Around my period, I needed another dose before bedtime so I didn't wake in the middle of the night with a migraine. This meant I was taking 4 and a half Esgic+tablets a day, every day. Eventually I was getting what my doctor said were rebound headaches from the Esgic when I didn't use them at night. He wanted to take me off the Esgic or only give me a limit of 3 a day. I panicked!! He sent me to a Neurologist, who sent me for an MRI, which was normal. He started me on 50mgs of Elavil. The NEXT DAY was the first time in years I didn't wake up with the usual headache. After only one dose of the Elavil! He also put me on something to wean me off the Esgic over a period of 8 months. I still got migraines but not as often. He also gave me Ultram 50mgs for the daily headaches that weren't migraines. One of those didn't work well, and I tried TWO Ultram and that worked. He raised the Elavil to 75mgs a day after about 6 months. Bumping up the dosage almost completely rid me of the daily headaches. I still have the headaches during my period, and use the Ultram, but if I'm getting a migraine I use a Tigan Suppository, and take Imitrex nasal spray. The Imitrex makes my insides burn and makes me so much MORE nauseated, so that's why I use the Tigan for the upset stomach. I usually throw up when I start getting the migraines, so the Tigan helps tremendously. I tried the Imitrex pills, but they take too long. I also tried the injection which works in about 30 minutes, but also makes me feel weird and off balance. It also leaves a bruise on your thigh where you inject it, although it does work quickly. The nasal spray is pretty quick, and also upsets the stomach, but seems to be the lesser evil of the three. As soon as I feel the headache coming on, I run for the Tigan so I don't start throwing up, and use the Imitrex nasal spray about 10 to 15 minutes after I use the suppository. Sometimes I have to use another nasal Imitrex about 1 hour later if the headache is dulled but not gone. I don't have an aura or see spots before a headache, but where my ears are connected to my head, they start to get tender and ache, and if that happens, I know to take some quick action or I'll have my head in the toilet while my head is throbbing. I hope you can use some of what I told you. I'm deathly afraid of my migraines, and have to sit in a dark room, no sounds, no light, and I can't lay down. I have to sit up and balance my head upright because if I tilt my head at all, the pounding hurts that part of my head. Sometimes I pace around trying to tilt my head in a different direction for each heartbeat so that I spread the pain around in my head. Nothing can touch any part of my head or neck or the throbbing on that area is much worse. I've considered suicide many times during these headaches and feel completely drained the next day from waiting for each heartbeat so I can flinch from the pain. Anyone who's never experienced a migraine doesn't understand the pain, and drain on a person's system. You can't have a normal life because you never know when a migraine will strike, and most people don't understand why you can't function and keep going. Thank goodness for Imitrex. So, Peggy, you might try the Elavil, and Ultram. The Elavil is an anti-depressant, and I'm not depressed, but I'm living a normal life now, and usually only have two migraines a month, and that's usually around my period. I've learned what my triggers are, so if I get upset, or cry really hard, or lose my temper, or drink alcohol, or use soy sauce I know I'm pushing my luck. I have four boys, ages 6 7 11 & 12, and can't be slowed down. Sometimes I have to keep going no matter what. Try staying calm with four boys! Ha! I hope you find something to help you in this letter. I wish it hadn't taken me so long to find help. Good luck, and know that I commiserate with you. I'm now free to work and know that I won't get a migraine every time I get upset or cry or start my period. Take care and stay sane! >
