Kelley: about endometriomasFrom: Anna (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu May 17 13:02:49 2001
Kelley ~ GLad to hear from you. Our stories sound familiar. I am 40 years old...........they were nervous about my cysts........thought they could be cancerous. Thankfully they were not ! But I have been reading a lot about endometriomas and there is a small chance they could recur within one year of having one removed, An even greater chance that one could recur within a five year time period. Something like 55% chance within that 5 yr. period. But everyone is different.....I wish I knew how long it took this thing to grow to the size it was. I too, didnt know anything about endometriosis. I know plenty now. Did you tell your doctor you wanted your ovaries left in? Or is that how he/she feels? My doctor told me if one does come back, he would then want to do more definitive surgery (meaning taking out everything) I have mixed emotions about that. I would like to never have my period again, but I dont want to go on hormone replacement therapy cuz I hear it makes you gain weight. Isn't that terrible. I base health decisions on whether or not I will gain weight ! Otherwise I am done having kids and there is no reason to keep all the reproductive parts, unless there are serious side effects or long term negative effects. Well, thanks for writing back. Does your doctor (or do you) want you to have a test every so often, like a sonogram, to see if an endometrioma is growing back? Take care, Anna
