Could dexamethasone affect pregnancy test results?From: anonymous (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed Apr 4 11:44:57 2001
Hello, I am extremely worried (even though my doctor has told me not to be) that I may be pregnant. Three urine pregnancy test results and one blood test have shown negative results, however, I am still worried. My periods started at the age of 12 and were pretty irregular from the get-go. After a few years, at about age 15, I did not get a period for approx. 1 year. An endocrinologist did ultrasounds and found no cysts. However, he put me on dexamethasone (.5mg nightly) because something (I was young and don't really remember the reason) was irregular. My family doctor believes (but is not 100% sure) that I am on these pills to suppress tissue growth by my adrenals... or something. Whatever it is they do, they also regulate my periods so that I get them. Anyhow, I took a little "break" from these pills for about 6 months and noticed that my period had gone away. I am back on them now (3 months) but I did not get a period this month. My last period was Feb. 17-19 (not as long as usual but still normally heavy) and I am now about 2 weeks late. Again, pregnancy tests showed negative but because dexamethasone affects hormones (or is a hormone) I am worried that it may have affected results. Any information would be greatly appreciated, atleast to help put my mind at ease. Thanks!
