Re: Belle's article/chatFrom: wanda (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat Mar 31 05:20:20 2001
DZ, I think all of us should go back to school and become DR's for each other!! :O) Just a thought. I am so sorry to hear that you had such a horrible time. I don't understand these healthcare professionals. Most of them don't understand unless it is happening to them. The only Dr that I felt like even cared about my pain and my relief of it was Dr Albee in Atlanta...7 hours from home. Hopefully we can change this. Aside from the fact that my typing leaves much to be desired, it was fun talking in "real time". I really enjoyed Belle's Themestream article and it just made me think of my experience as a patient and as an ER nurse (I'm currently not working, still off on med leave, the 3rd one in 3 years). As a patient, right before my surgery (open lap), I had this EXTREME back pain. I called my ob/gyn's office to tell them that it really was unbearable and could I have something until the surgery for the pain. I was told that she doesn't prescribe narcotics because the DEA gets involved and it gets too hard to deal with. She then told me to go to the pain mgmt clinic but that it takes 6 weeks to get in. I then called my orthopedic doctor, the one who treats me for the herniated disc, and he called in Ultram, which did nothing. After my surgery, I had a PCA pump with Demerol. They took that off the very next morning at 7 am. and began giving me Darvocet. The whole experience was a pain nightmare. I have a back condition that was totally ignored through all of this. The entire time I've been treated for my back I never took anything stronger than Darvocet, but I couldn't even get that as an Rx prior to the surgery. My ob told me that Motrin would work better. Will the incredulousness of the medical profession ever cease to amaze me? I am currently looking for a new career. I've burnt out on nursing. Now that I've been a patient, and had to fight to get time off of work in a profession that is supposed to be caring, I'm moving on. I also spent 2 days in the hospital where I work and caught my own IV infiltrating, had to beg for pain meds and got them 3 hours later. And, they're laying off nurses at this hospital. Just wanted to share/vent a little! Take Care, D.Z.
