Severe bleeding/anemiaFrom: anonymous (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed Mar 14 21:54:34 2001
Three years ago I had a Laparatomy which the dr removed endo, ovarian cysts, & adhesions. I continued to have the pain and after awhile I changed doctors. The second doctor decided I had adenomyosis and gave me depo-provera. I bled mildly everyday for three months instead of 5-7 days a month and still the pain continued. The next suggestion was Lupron and I refused that due to what I read about the side effects. So I was just trying to "live with it" by treating myself. This month my period lasted 17 days. The first week was mild compared to my usual period and then it got progressively worse. I almost waited too long to go to the doctor. Last Thursday my hemoglobin was an 11 and this Monday it was a 9 (my normal is a 14). The nurse practioner gave me BCP's 4 for 4 day 3 for 3 days 2 for 2 days and 1 until the second pack is done. I am still spotting!! The pain is getting better though. I have an appointment to my gyn next week. Can endo or adenomyosis cause this severe bleeding? My nurse practioner was so worried because I was bleeding so badly that she called me twice at home on Saturday to try to get me to go to the ER if I was still bleeding. She wants me to get a hysterectomy because she said the BCP's are just a bandaide to whatever is wrong with me. I really don't have time for surgery. Naturally, if I have something that makes surgery urgent I would go along with it, very reluctantly. I am 39 and have had a tubal ligation so fertility is not an issue but I am not happy thinking about having a hysterectomy. But I also can't bleed every month like I did this month. I would like to have information on alternatives to hysterectomy. Thanks, Shelle
