Re: Pain Killer Addictions

Hi there:

I agree with the others...you have a real problem that needs the pain medication. As long as your doctor works with you, knows you, knows your problem, and can monitor you, it shouldn't be a problem. I have been on Vicodin now for almost a year too. I used to worry as you do about becoming addicted to it...but it is not like I crave it, or something like that, I need it for the pain. One of my docs in the past told me that if I worry about it, and am careful to take it when needed, then I don't have an addiction...in other words, I am aware of the potential of addiction, but I know my body, I know that I am in real pain from a very real, painful disease, I know that I need the pain medication, I know that if I don't need it, I won't take it. Does that make sense?

None of us wants to be in pain, or likes it, or wants to take continual pain medication...there are other alternatives, of course, but you must do what works for you. What I do is a lot of deep breathing and stretching, which relaxes me to help me cope with the pain. Walks and exercise help with endorphin levels to keep pain low (I know, I don't always want to exercise either because of the pain). I also take Aleve in the a.m with ½ Vicodin...I find at times that ½ of a Vicodin works just as well as a whole one, and I sometimes congratulate myself on working to keep the pain level down with less...this works for me and helps me get through...I don't know if it would for you or not.

Recently, they prescribed an anti-depressant for me, Effexor, which has helped lessen the pain, as it raises your pain level, and your brain interprets pain differently...you might ask your doc about it.

Of course, if you are in a great deal of pain continually, you might talk again with your doc and see what other options are available...surgery again?...you don't say if you have had this.

I hope this helps you..you're not alone...pain-free wishes to you.
