Re: Kept in the dark about illnessFrom: Marcia (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu Feb 22 13:01:58 2001
Hi Jackie: When I was in junior high, I started having a lot of stomach problems, pain, and menstrual problems--they put me through all those tests in the hospital, and all they would tell me was that it was "stress." (What did a pediatrician know anyway?). In my twenties I was diagnosed with IBS, so have been battling that ever since. Then 5 years ago a whole lot of pain with diarrhea which turned out to be endometriosis (on the bowel) (after the whole slew of tests again were negative). And that doc just closed and did no surgery to excise -- he thought hormone therapy would be best. Just recently I found out that he "neglected" to tell me all that was going on--he wouldn't even tell me what stage I was in (yes I got my records too, and he didn't tell me the half of it!!). Over the years, I've discovered that the docs don't seem to tell us everything, or what our options are with all the ramifications, and sometimes tend to think "we don't need to know" everything. Or else they may not know what the heck they are doing (sounds like your doc). I've since tried to become very informed about this disease. I hope your new doc is an endo specialist that can get to bottom of your pain. I'll be thinking of you. Best wishes, Marcia
