I saw the definition of this and realized I have had this done for all bowel surgeries and procedures but NEVER for a lap! Sounds like a great idea though. Thanks for the info and you can be assured I will ask my gyne why it's not done by doc's around here (in all the years I've had endo and with all of the doc's you'd think someone would have thought of this..)

Sorry Kristy,

A bowel prep is a bowel prep and there are few different brands you can take... to clear out your bowel, so you are only passing water by the end..then you know the bowel is clear.. The easiest way to do this is by going on a light diet 2 days before and the clear fluids the day before surgery and then you take what ever product you doctor uses.the night before surgery and this is mainly to prevent infection, incase of a perforation of the bowel when the lap is done but it is also to prevent the person from drowning in their own secretions and you can lower the chance of this happening ...if the bowel is cleaned out ..prior to surgery and there is no excuse for this not to being done or ordered.... in this day and age...with the knowledge and technology we have. Best Wishes,

Belle.

Hi Amanda,

The way a bowel prep is done varies from dr to dr. A bowel prep could consist of a clear liquid diet for two days before surgery or it could consist of other things. With my first surgery I had to drink a liquid mixture called Go-Lytely, and with the second one the prep required me to drink a product called Magnesium Citrate.

The purpose of this is to clean the bowel before you have surgery so that there won't be complications such as puncturing the bowel (did I do ok at trying to explain this Belle?).

I hope that this helps. And please insist that your dr give you one before any type of abdominal surgery.
