Kelly thank you for this (we aren't sure when my father will be going so this reminder to help my family deal with things is great!! As you know, I have not seen him since January and don't expect to before he goes, yet it still weighs heavily on my heart....Am being strong and the advocate for medical stuff for everyone else so....Anyway, this really DID help as a reminder. thank you) thank you also for the birthday wishes. Gonna be an odd one, but then so far I've yet to have one that wasn't. I always try to make it special for myself like work with Christmas Promise putting together gifts for families from those "Dear Santa " letters school children write. The organization gets donations year round for the letter and also for everyone in the household so I have done wrapping and organizing with them. Lasso have gone out Christmas Eve with one of the "Santas" to deliver the anonymous gifts (that was a great b-day gift for myself) I also worked one year as an elf in the mall to help with the Santa pictures (am great with children) Anything I can do to keep the spirit, ya know? Thank you again for the b-day wishes - it meant a lot to me - you'll never know how much :'-} So, here's to a wonderful holiday and peaceful, painless New Year:) Sally

Debbie, Thought you could use this dealing with the holidays with your mom. And also to anyone else who has lost loved ones. All my love...

TODAY'S TIP: GRIEF, LOSS, AND GETTING THROUGH THE HOLIDAYS
by Barbara Self, MSN, CRNP
The holidays are a time of joy and a time of sharing love and laughter, but
they may also be a time of emptiness, loneliness, and sadness. The loss of a
loved one gives the holidays a different feeling, for things are not as they
once were.
To help get through the difficult weeks ahead, keep these things in mind:
* Your loved one would not want you to grieve in an unhealthy manner.
* Your loved one would want you to celebrate the holidays as you always did.
* Your loved one is always in your heart.
* You are still alive and you have work to do and lives to touch.

In addition, you might consider ways to ease what is already a stressful time: * Simplify the holiday process and focus on the reason for the season. * Talk about your feelings. * Surround yourself with loving family and friends. * Realize that you have experienced a loss. * Remember the good times. * Keep a tradition your loved one enjoyed alive (colored lights or attending a church service).

If you find yourself struggling during these times, ask for help. Grief counselors are available in many communities.
