Okay thanks Kristy...Now I know as well. I didn't know it was called a "bowel prep" either, but I have had them so many times since 1976 or so I just got used to starving on fluids for 2 days and using Fleet enemas or that other stuff you drink (that has made me vomit instead).....Learn something new every day. This has a name for it...Now when I do it this next week or after (depending on what tests they decide to run; hopefully test and NOT opening me up again...i.e. the protrusion which is bigger and from which the side-effects are worsening is NOT where a siggy or colonoscopy can reach in order to view it - too far into the intestinal tract as in close to the stomach, etc. so might be a barium enema or a different swallow test [I know the esophageal motility/manemtry (sp??) test won't go that deep so not sure what swallow one could??] or surgery to see things and hopefully fix it. I may have an adhesion that's blocking things somewhat and/or my neuro and GI tract problems have worsened. Not sure yet, but no pain or nausea meds to take in the meantime...Ick!! That's why I've been so absent - very sick and in some of the worst pain I've had my entire life) Anyway, now I know there's a name for the prep and will be a more "informed" patient - Hehe!! Thank you :-} Have a great holiday everyone!! Joyeux Noel et Bon Anne, Sally

Hi Amanda,

The way a bowel prep is done varies from dr to dr. A bowel prep could consist of a clear liquid diet for two days before surgery or it could consist of other things. With my first surgery I had to drink a liquid mixture called Go-Lytely, and with the second one the prep required me to drink a product called Magnesium Citrate.

The purpose of this is to clean the bowel before you have surgery so that there won't be complications such as puncturing the bowel (did I do ok at trying to explain this Belle?).

I hope that this helps. And please insist that your dr give you one before any type of abdominal surgery.
