Re: advice neededFrom: Jennifer (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon Sep 4 15:49:51 2000
Hi Amy - I have had a few laparotomies as well as laproscopies (sorry for spelling) both were ok. My recent surgery was 8/31/00 I had a laparotomy to remove a pelvic mass on my right ovary. Turns out I had a tumor the size of a softball. I had pain off and on from it since just after my hysterectomy in Dec of 1999 but it wasnt anything that was really a bother until last week, i thought it was my appendix it hurt so bad. In any case, I had a cat scan done and the tech wouldn't let me leave, she kept redoing the cat scan. Then she insisted that I also have an ultrasound done, in which I did and then still she wouldn't let me leave and made me go for a vaginal ultrasound. Finally she sent me straight up to my GYN who told me about the mass. He was worried about it and the scheduled me for surgery right away. As far as drugs to shrink it. there are some but it depends on what you actually have to whether or not the drugs will work. It is worth a shot though, they may work and if they dont then you can opt for the surgery. As far as surgery goes, I have always bounced back very quickly from my surgeries. The hysto in Dec took me about 1 week, I had the large incision, and I was doing my normal things again, I was tired alot and hurt but I didn't let it stop me. This time its been 4 days since the surgery and I am ready to go again, still tired and hurt but like I said these things dont stop me. I am going back to college tomorrow. I also take tons of Motrin..LOL!! Some people aren't like that though and it takes them longer to recover. Doc says I am the minority, the majority of women take about 4 to 6 weeks to recoup. Most of this depends on you, your activity level, your willingness to push yourself, etc. Boy do I push the limits..lol. The doc thinks I am crazy but he even told me the other day that he is glad to see that I dont let anything get in my way. With the surgery, I had a spinal so I was awake during it, they give you versad to calm you, you probably wont remember anything. Or you can be put out, thats your option. I have staples which are annoying but they get removed within a week so its not too bad. For the hysto I stayed 3 days in the hospital and for this surgery I had it done on Thursday afternoon and went home Friday afternoon. Well in any case...sorry this is soo long. If you have any other questions, I would be happy to help and I am sure the others have things to tell that I probably forgot :-) Jennifer TAH 12/28/99 Right Ovary removed due to tumor 8/31/00
