Re: Depo Provera Information

I have been on depo twice -- first time for 1 1/2 years, 2nd time for 6 months. The first time was before I was diagnosed with endo -- just to help with the "normal" cramping. I gained 70 lbs, experienced no noticeable pain relief, but I did not once bleed during the entire year and a half. The second time was just after my endo was diagnosed. I gained another 40 pounds (after having lost only 20 of the first 70), again, no pain relief, and I bled constantly for almost the entire time. I've also been on the pill (except for the 2 years I was on depo) since I was 14 for help with the cramping -- really no difference.

Currently I'm in my second month of Lupron. I am still optimistic. I've cut way back on the number of pain pills that I've had to take (1 a week instead of constantly every day), but in the past week it seems like the pain is getting worse.

As for how long to be regular after quitting depo -- the first time when I experienced complete cessation of menstruation, it took 2 months (I was on the pill after the depo) for my cycles to come back. The second time, nothing was normal anyway, and that was over a year ago & I still haven't had anything resembling a normal period. I haven't tried to conceive, but I've heard 1 year after quitting depo to conceive.

I guess that's kind of rambling. Everyone has a different experience -- the weight gain was too much for me to deal with. I went from 115 lbs when I was 17 to 210 when I was 20. Even now, I still weigh 175 (although I am losing weight, thanks to the diet that finally worked!), and I'm 5'2".

I guess the point of this overly long note is do your research, ask everyone, but in the end do only what you want to do because it won't be the same as anyone else's reaction to the same thing.

I have been on depo for 5 years now... and it has worked pretty well... until the last 6 months or so I've been pretty pain free... I experienced about a 40lb weight gain in the first 2 years I was taking it... however I will take that over what I was going through before I was diagnosed! I've heard it can take as long as a year to get everything right for having a baby after depo... I'm looking at trying for kids in about 2-3 years from now... however I guess my ovaries are in pretty bad shape... and it is going to be tough... anyways... back on point... What happened with me is: had laproscopy and cleaned up the sites... was put on lupron for 6 months... then I was put straight on depo. However now they also have me on the pill too... I have started bleeding fairly heavy all the time which I guess can happen when you've been on depo for long periods of time (dr explained to me that the uterus starts getting thin) Anyways to make a long story short.... My experience up until recently has been great! However in my case they are trying to keep me from having any kind of cycles until I'm ready for kids... so it may not be for you. Good Luck. Let me know how it works out for you and hope I've been of some help.

Could anyone give me their experiences with Depo Provera. I have recently had my sixth laperoscopy and my doctor wants me to start this. I hope to have kids in the next two-three years, but I'm really concerned about how long it takes to have a normal cycle after the Depo Provera and any side effects. Any personal experiences you could share would be very helpful. Thanks!
