Re: Abnormal pap showing benign endometrial cellsFrom: Stacey (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue Jul 11 19:38:19 2000
Kim, You may want to post your concern to the Women's Health Forum on http://www.obgyn.net. There are Doctors there that can answer your question much better than I can, but here's a thought: According to the American Association of Family Physicians, benign endometrial cells on a pap smear, expecially those that do not cause other symptoms (ie irregular bleeding) are nothing to worry about. The cases of endometrial cells on a pap smear that do cause problems, a D&C is usually called for. However, there has been a link between benign endometrial cells showing up on pap smears and endometrial cancer. This means that there's a higher percentage of people with benign endometrial cells who have endometrial cancer than the percentage of people in the general population who have cervical cancer. At least that's what this study says. So, in my opinion (which probably does not mean as much as the opinion of a Doctor, mind you :) you may or may not have a higher risk for cancer. Or, it could be absolutely nothing. Here's the link to a synopsis of that study: http://www.aafp.org/afp/990115ap/tips.html Good luck to you! I hope that this helps and I hope that everything is okay. Post again and let us know!!!
