I apoligize that this may be rather long, but I am trying to get some extra advice before I see my doctor tomorrow.Last October (11 months ago!) I noticed a very tiny lump on the very outer edge of my left breast, almost under my arm. It hurt to touch and sometimes bothered me even when it wasn't touched. I waited three months for it to go away. When it didn't, I saw my gynecologist. He sent me for a mammogram. (By the way, i am 39 years old and in good health). The mammogram showed an enlarged lymph node. Since I had no other illness or symptoms, I was told that it was OK and to ignore it. In May when it was still there, I saw my family physician. She sent me for an ultrasound and to see a surgeon for consultation because she said no lymph node should be enlarged for six months without a reason. Although I was told that the ultrasound picked up the lump, she said that it was breast tissue and nothing to worry about. I never did understand that answer, and I'm not sure my doctor did either. If it was showing up as breast tissue, wouldn't that mean it was something solid, not a cyst, and should have been looked at further? The surgeon didn't see the ultrasound results at all. He felt the lump, said to give it an ADDITIONAL three months, and he'd check it again. I see the surgeon again tomorrow. I don't push things with these doctors because I guess I don't want to look like I'm paniced over nothing. But at this point, I'm concerned and feel like something further should have been done earlier. The lump is by no means huge, but it is bigger. It is only slightly tender to press on, but I do have pain about half-way down the arm on that side, and sharp pains in that breast. And there is also a slight, but noticeable, swelling, in that breast. None of this changes with my cycle - it is constant. My question is, what do I ask for at the surgeon's office if he says "it's nothing"? I'm not comfortable letting it go, but certainly don't want to insist on unnecessary tests. Thank you for any recommendations you can give me!
