If there is blood from the nipple and surgical excision of the duct containing a papilloma or other growth is performed, it should not cause a major problem with breastfeeding in the future. The surgeon does NOT generally remove all the tissue under the nipple area...just the duct that is bleeding and the underlying mass. Hannah Brooks, MD, FACS
