Dear Diane- Bleeding from a specific duct may indicate a growth in that breast duct. This is not necessarily a cancerous growth, but it should be checked. I cannot tell from your description, however, if the bleeding was due to a superficial nipple problem such as irritation or injury to the skin, or if it truly came from within the breast and bled from a duct opening. It is appropriate for a surgeon to take a look at this. If it does not return and if no other abnormalities are detected, then observation would be in order. If the discharge is elicited by the surgeon and/or if an abnormality shows up on imaging, a biopsy will be recommended. The most common cause of bloody nipple discharge is a benign growth known as a papilloma. Cancer is much less common. Hannah Brooks,MD, FACS
