Dear Mary- As you have concluded, it is not uncommon to have asymmetry in breast tissue. It is also common to have armpit swelling and pain in relation to changes in cycle and especially in women with fibrocystic condition. If these lymph nodes feel hard or show up as very dense on mammography, then they should be addressed. Other reasons for armpit swelling may be axillary breast tissue itself--this is also fairly common and has nothing to do with the lymph nodes. Rather, it is extra breast tissue in the area...and responds to hormones just as all breast tissue does. Hannah Brooks, MD, FACS
