Dear Ashley- While having many people with cancer in your immediate family can increase your chances of developing it, it is still very unusual for an 18 year old to get breast cancer. It's wonderful that you are following up on this finding. The ultrasound will help determine if any discrete lumps you are feeling are solid or cystic. Cysts are fluid-filled and are generally left alone. If a solid mass shows up, further testing may or may not be recommended depending on the appearance, size, and other characteristics of the mass. Try to stay cool. Getting anxious won't change the outcome, and will prevent you from using your energy to enjoy yourself. Keep us posted on your progress, chances are much greater that we will all be hearing good news. Hannah Brooks, MD, FACS

I'm 18 years old and went to my first GYN appointment last week. She felt a lump and said most likely it is a cyst or normal breast tissue. She did not seem too woried about it but I am. She is sending me for an ultrasound this coming week. Is it possible that it could be cancerous? My family has a major history of cancer although none have been breast cancer. I don't even know if that makes a difference. I know it's hard to say anything without actually seeing anything but I'm super nervous. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
