Dear Daryl- Nipple piercing as a very dangerous undertaking! I urge you to remove the rings now, let the abscess drain, and see a doctor about the infection. Because of the structure of the breast, with all ducts ending at the nipple, any infection at the nipple that is not fully healed can smolder and track upward, chronically infecting the entire duct system of the breast and setting up an unfortunate cycle of reinfection. Often, the abscesses start up very far from the nipple and are multiple. They can have unusual bacteria in them as well, and be difficult to treat, even with multiple surgeries. I know of one young woman who underwent mastectomy after three years of recurrent, essentially incurable, infections. Remove them now and do NOT encourage anyone else to pierce their nipples. I got my nipples pierced in October. About a month later I noticed a dark area starting to appear on my right areola. I initially paid no attention to it, assuming that the piercing was just taking a little longer to heal. The dark area later developed into a lump with dry, itchy, scab-like skin. Even more recently it has become very, very sore and has increased in size. Yesterday in the shower the scab-like area opened up, releasing a great deal of puss-like fluid. I have been doing some research on the web, and I'm pretty sure that it is a subareola abcess caused by my piercing, but I am interested in hearing someone elses opinion on this matter.
Thanks a bunch, Daryl
