Areola Abcess???

I got my nipples pierced in October. About a month later I noticed a dark area starting to appear on my right areola. I initially paid no attention to it, assuming that the piercing was just taking a little longer to heal. The dark area later developed into a lump with dry, itchy, scab-like skin. Even more recently it has become very, very sore and has increased in size. Yesterday in the shower the scab-like area opened up, releasing a great deal of puss-like fluid. I have been doing some research on the web, and I'm pretty sure that it is a subareola abcess caused by my piercing, but I am interested in hearing someone elses opinion on this matter.
