Dear Lros- The calcifications are likely benign from what you are describing. Your doctor was being thorough by ordering the mammogram and sonogram for your breast complaints...But if both breasts are lumpy and tender, it is much more likely you have benign fibrocystic breast condition. This is common and can be managed with some conservative measures in many women. It usually quiets down after menopause, when homrmone levels go down. The designation of BIRADS 3 as a score on your mammogram simply means that the radiologist wants you to have another film to follow up in 4-6 months. This is because it was your first mammogram and there is no way to know if that calcification was there 5 days or 5 years. The follow up mammogram will help follow it, to be sure it is not changing and that no new ones are developing. There are no symptoms associated with calcifications. They are simply deposits of calcium in the tissue, and can be due to many, many causes. For example, some women have them because of a past infection or injury, other women have them because they get inflammation from fibrocystic condition. Certain types of calcifications may indicate a very early cancer...but this is much, much less common than all the other reasons. Also, in your age group with no family history, it would be even less likely to indicate anything serious. So, try to stay calm and just follow up with the next mammogram. Once the question has been cleared up, you will not need to do them anymore until you turn age 40. If you want to read up more, go to http://www.imaginis.com for suggestions on managing breast pain. Hello! I am 30 years old adn have no familial history of breast cancer. I have been having breast tenderness for a couple of months now. My doctor thought it was a cyst, so I was sent to get a mammogram and ultrasound. After magnification views they said my breast tissue was very dense but could see two faint calcifications that are probably benign. They have a tubular configuration with peripheral-rim type calcification. Ultrasound showed no cystic or solid mass. I was given a bi-rad category 3 rating. My question to you is what are the syptoms or signs of these calcifications?? I still have the breast tenderness. My Doctor wants me to get a mammogram in 3 months instead of 6 months. Does this tenderness override that mammogram or alert me that something is still wrong?? Should I be concerned?? Also does starting the birth control pill affect these calcifications or cause any problems in the future?? Thank you!!!
