Dear Katherine- If your breasts are causing you this much physical discomfort now, they will only be larger and more painful with a pregnancy. The breasts can often double or triple in size during lactation. I am not sure if your plastic surgeon is taking that factor into consideration. The reason he or she recommended waiting is most likely due to your not having had children yet. A breast reduction operation can sometimes interfere with the ability to breastfeed, since tissue is removed and the nipple areolar complex is relocated on the remaining breast. You always have the option of not breastfeeding your babies if you are having such a hard time with the breasts right now. There is nothing wrong with making this choice as long as you are aware of the consequences. Discuss this with your plastic surgeon again. Hannah Brooks, MD,FACS

I am wondering about the side effects of having a breast reduction before pregnancy, and what happens to one's post-operative breasts during and after pregnancy. I am 25, have never had children, and about to get a breast reduction. My doctor strongly recommended I consider waiting until after we have had all our children to have the surgery, but I can't imagine waiting another 10 years when I am already in so much pain because of my breasts. Can anyone tell me anything and everything they know about this subject, especially if you have gone through pregnancy after a breast reduction?
