Dear Fleesh-

You sound informed about what your mass could be. If it is a fibroadenoma (and chances are high that it is) you need not pursue any treatment once you're SURE that's all it is ;so, observation can be elected-perhaps after 'proving' it is a fibroadenoma with an ultrasound and/or a fine needle biopsy.

At times, even benign masses such as fibroadenomas can grow; if this is the case, the best option may be removal since letting even a benign tumor grow too large can make surgery more troublesome and/or may distort normal breast tissue.

If you do not know if it has grown, you can ask your doctor to order a sonogram for an accurate measurement and have another sonogram at an interval of six months to a year to see if the measurement has changed.

In answer to your second question: Yes, A piercing can lead to a 'lump' in the breast or other part of the body that has been pierced. It does not sound related from your description, but you should be careful to look for signs of infection and treat them as quickly as possible if you do notice anything abnormal (eg. pain, redness, pus, nonhealing area, etc).

hi everyone...

i have a doctor's appointment on friday because i found a lump in my breast a while ago... i'm thinking that it's a fibroadenoma - it's hard, smooth, and oval-shaped (about an inch and a half), and moves easily, and there's no pain or real discomfort. i haven't noticed any change in size or shape in the past few months.

i guess i should have gotten it checked out sooner (it's been over 6 months since i noticed it), but i was terrified :\ we have a history of breast cancer in our family... and I was too scared to even find out if that's what it was or not :\

i'm 21 now. i was wondering if fibroadenomas are usually removed for someone who's still young, or if they're just left alone and monitored. i'm scared about undergoing surgery, and i'd rather not unless it was necessary.

also, is there any sort of association between fibroadenomas/cysts and nipple piercings? i'd noticed the lump before i got the piercing, though, so i don't think they're related, but i was still curious, because they're on the same breast.

thanks very much for your help :)
